More About Drupal

Drupal is a content management framework developed by the open source community. It has been available since 2001, so is now relatively mature. The core is stable and secure, whilst performance and scalability have also improved over the years.

The framework can be extended by the use of modules, of which there are hundreds available and new ones being developed every day. Drupal is also themeable, which means the look and feel of a site can be tailored exactly and changed easily if required.

The community driving Drupal was estimated at 550,000 strong in 2009. These consist of people from all walks of life and include system architects, developers, testers, and regular users. All have a vested interest in the product, which brings the following benefits:

  • there is no license fee (subject to GPL agreement)
  • the source code is readily available
  • thousands of community developers are constantly improving Drupal
  • support from the community is always on hand
